77 per cent MPs believe social care is underfunded

Alzheimer’s society commissioned a You Gov survey which revealed 77% of MPs believe social care is underfunded. The survey also found that 80% politicians think dementia should be either mostly or fully funded by the government. The Alzheimer’s society are conducting a campaign called ‘Fix Dementia Care’, and it has found that on average people with dementia spend £100,000 on their care. These costs are significantly higher (15%) when the person self-funds their care compared to standard social care. Alzheimer’s society are pushing the government to invest into a £2.4 billion Dementia Fund for high quality dementia care for discussing a long-term arrangement. Their survey supports this idea as 65% of MPs would be in support of a Dementia Fund-59% Conservative MPs and 74% Labour MPs.
