A patients’ panel has expressed alarm at the scale of cancelled hospital operations in the past two months.

The Leicester Mercury Patients’ Panel is also concerned about Leicester Hospitals’ inability to get back on track with the 18-week referral to treatment target this year.

Last week, hospital bosses revealed the cost to University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust in cancelled operations ran to £10 million in a single month.

The majority of postponements were due to a shortage of beds needed for recovering patients.

In January, 1,111 operations were cancelled, while in February this was 531. Some 67 of these were for vital cancer treatment. However, the majority were for non-urgent operations.
