2,600 people to be given free weight-loss courses in a bid to stop soaring obesity rates

There are around 475,000 overweight or obese people in Norfolk, and weight-problems increases the risk of developing a number of other conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and strokes.

The scheme, which is estimated to cost around £170,000, is an early example of how healthcare in Norfolk and Waveney will change over the next five years – as it is part of the region’s Sustainability and Transformation Plan (STP).

While the slimming courses will only be available to people aged between 40-75 who receive a health check from their GP – Dr Louise Smith, director of public health at Norfolk County Council, said “we have to start somewhere”.
