Trainees tell HEE inspectors that they feel “overwhelmed, unsafe and were being asked to work beyond their abilities”

A Health Education England (HEE) report on the Isle of Wight Trust obtained by the HSJ via a freedom of information request, noted “Challenging behaviour” among senior clinicians and “disconnected” working between departments. The trust, which was put in “special measures” by the CQC in 2017, is at risk of losing some of its trainee doctors.

The HEE report said “significant stress” was being put on trainees and they were “not able to do their job effectively” as a result. Trainees in acute medicine at St Mary’s Hospital on the Island told the inspectors they were “overwhelmed, felt unsafe and were being asked to work beyond their abilities”.
