Higher weekend deaths in hospital not due to lack of doctors, landmark study shows

A landmark study has shown that the higher mortality rates among weekend patients is not due to a lack of senior doctors on duty in hospitals. Studies have shown that patients admitted on a Saturday or Sunday were 16 per cent more likely to die over the next month than those admitted on a Wednesday, however a landmark study has shown that a lack of doctors is not the cause and it is possible that a lack of GP services and poor community healthcare could be behind the higher death rates.
