Not only are more mental health patients being sent out of area because of a lack of beds in Devon, the money spent on their care is the highest than anywhere else in the country.
New figures, provided by trusts and clinical commissioning groups in response to Freedom of Information requests made by the British Medical Association (BMA), state adult mental health services provider Devon Partnership NHS Trust (DPT) sent 192 adults to out of area placements during 2016/ 17, costing £11,963. It was an increase from the previous year when the number was 162 patients, but the cost to the NHS during 2015/16 was higher amounting £13,901.
