A Devon hospital fell significantly short of the four-hour A&E wait target on boxing day.

Plymouth’s Derriford Hospital has confirmed it only saw 51 per cent of patients within the specified wait time. The national target all hospitals are required to achieve is 95 per cent.

It has blamed the major failing on high patient numbers and major trauma incidents, along with cases of gastroenteritis and flu-like symptoms.
