The NHS trusts said if the development does not go ahead, it will “not be able to offer an adequate standard of care to cater for the residents within its area”
Mental health services and a drug and alcohol detox unit at St Peter’s Hospital could be moved if around 12 hectares of green belt land is redeveloped to provide more than 470 homes.
The proposed development would include 144 new and redeveloped homes primarily for NHS staff in a bid by the Chertsey hospital to attract and retain employees.
The planning statement reveals that the hospital has “an ongoing shortfall of some 460 staff”, saying: “a significant factor in this is the comparatively low pay for hospital staff relative to the very high cost of living in the area.”
