The Society for Acute Medicine has warned that the government’s plan to tackle NHS waiting lists “will fail” unless pressure on emergency services is lifted as planned care will “never function satisfactorily if other parts of the service are under significant strain”.
At least 13,000 operations were cancelled across 40 NHS trusts during December and January, according to data from the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM.)
